Founded by Danish “gypsy” brewer Mikkel Borg Bjergsø in 2006, the Mikkeller brewery found early success with their experimental microbrews and colorful branding. Today, as well as having their very own brewery to call home in San Diego, California, Mikkeller also has bars around the word, with one of the best, I’d like to think, being right here in beer-booming Barna.
Bright and airy, this minimalist space hints at the company’s Danish roots and is elevated by a personal service style that the Danish refer to as hyggelig: cozy, welcoming and friendly. Over half of the 24 taps are dedicated to Mikkeller brews, but there’s plenty on offer from the likes of Warpigs, 3 Floyds, To Øl and various Catalan breweries. Be sure to ask the ever affable bar manager, Arturo, for recommendations and don’t miss out on the hearty pulled-pork and “shake your bootyfarra” sandwiches, or smaller beer companions such as nachos and bravas.
