Start with the butter: Rooftop Smokehouse makes a smoked version to spread on good bread or melt over a baked potato, bringing the flavor of wood smoke to some very simple pleasures. It’s one of the specialties at the smokehouse’s colmado (provisions shop), inside Fábrica Lehmann in the Eixample. The smoked cheddar is worth a look too.
The name records the original location: a Barcelona rooftop where Buster and Carla began smoking food with friends in 2014. A year later they moved into this former doll factory and made a business of it, supplying professional kitchens as well as home cooks. The courtyard is reason enough to pause on the way in, a remnant of the neighborhood’s industrial past now shared by workshops and creative businesses.
Start assembling lunch with the cured, spiced and slowly smoked pastrami. There’s bacon and trout too, along with anchovies in smoked butter for an easy aperitif. The ferments and pickles make good company for the richer foods: kimchi, sauerkraut, gherkins and smoked piparras (green peppers). Add beer mustard to the pastrami for a sandwich with some bite. These are provisions worth building a meal around, whether you’re cooking or just putting things on a plate.
The shop rounds out its own production with other pantry goods and a small selection of wines, cider, champagne, mezcal and vermouth. For a gift or a lunch with friends, the DIY pastrami box gathers the sandwich ingredients in one place. Pick up some good bread on the way home; much of the work has already been done.
